There's a unique phenomenon that happens every few years in Hollywood where movies with very similiar premises come along at the same time. It also provided a template for action movies for the next decade, with many adopting the "Die Hard on an X" formula, such as Speed, Passenger 57 and Under Siege. They're all functional and if you're a fan of the Souls-like genre, you'll probably have an okay time, but they're not amazing and you probably won't have any interest in ever playing them again.Die Hard was a hit during its original release and is now regarded as an action classic. In summary, I can't give any of these games any better than a C (or 70% or 3 stars depending on your rating scale). Surge 2 wasn't much different gameplay-wise from Surge 1, but story and environment was worse and felt less realistic and grounded than Surge 1 and the loss of the sense of isolation really ruined the atmosphere. I did, however enjoy the gritty sci-fi, Alien-like (as in the film) atmosphere. Surge 1 was a significant improvement in gameplay, but still on the bottom half of Souls-likes. Lords 1 was clunky as hell to play and the story, lore, and environments were quite bland and tropey. (Yes, I know they're not all the same developer, but they're very much related.) However, having played Lord of the Fallen 1 and The Surge 1 and 2, I'm skeptical. I'm going to assume those are bullshots, but at the same time, they're bullshots that are aiming for an art style/aesthetic that I very much enjoy.
