The forest is home to the peregrine falcon, the fastest bird in the world, and the pygmy owl which marks the smallest owl in Europe. Various birds inhabit the region, making it a popular spot for bird watchers. Mammals found in the national park include deer, pine marten, various species of bats, and garden dormouse. The humid climate is ideal for a variety of mosses and ferns. The acidic soil makes it difficult for some types of vegetation to survive. ![]() The entire Black Forest region features two nature parks and one national park, allowing for a plethora of wildlife to flourish.Ī majority of the forest landscape is populated by fir, spruce, and beech trees. Ecologyīlack Forest National Park is home to a variety of plant and animal species. Major peaks within the park include Dreifürstenstein, Badener Höhe, Hoher Ochsenkopf, Vogueskopf, and Altsteigerskopf. Hikers in the region can still spot remnants of this glaciation through the glacial cirques and tarns found in the park. The main ridgeline in the Northern Black Forest was eroded, becoming more defined due to glacial retreating. During the Eocene epoch either side of the plain was uplifted, with the Black Forest along the eastern side of the plain and the Vosges to the west.ĭuring the Riss and Würm glaciations, much of the Black Forest was heavily glaciated. Uplifting of the region was a result of the downfaulting of the Upper Rhine Plain which lies west of the range. The outer lays of rock are sandstone while the core of the range is a mix of gneiss and granite. The geological base of the range consists of crystalline bedrock that dates back to the Variscan orogeny. The range runs in a north to south fashion across Baden-Württemberg. ![]() Despite its name, the Black Forest includes not just a forest but also a mountain range that spans across southwestern Germany. Peaks in the park are part of the larger Black Forest (Schwarzwald). Schönbuch Nature Park lies to the east while Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park is to the west in France. The park lies within the Central/North Black Forest Nature Park (German: Naturpark Schwarzwald Mitte/Nord). Though a majority of the region is forested, there are also some sections that feature heath landscapes.īlack Forest National Park is located near various other parks and protected regions. The river then flows north, separating the Black Forest from the Murg valley to the east. The headwaters of the Murg are located in the southern portion of the national park. These are high quality craft products for the most part, although there is no shortage of plastic cuckoo clocks 'made in Taiwan'. The area around the entrance to the waterfalls is reminiscent of Disneyland here and in the town centre, a large number of shops offer the even larger number of tourists cuckoo clocks, woodcarvings, souvenirs as well as Black Forest ham and kirsch. Triberg is located directly on the Black Forest railway line and is famous for Germany's highest waterfalls, which have an overall drop of 163 metres over 7 cascades.
